Understanding the Gharara Silhouette

What makes a gharara unique is the construction of the trousers. Unlike a sharara which flares smoothly from the knee, a gharara features a distinct seam at the knee where gathered fabric creates a voluminous, ruffled flare. This gathering can be tight and structured for a bell shape, or looser for a more fluid effect. The trousers are paired with a short to mid-length kurta (often a peplum or angrakha style) and a large dupatta that is traditionally draped across both shoulders. The overall effect is regal and grand, making ghararas a favourite for bridal wear and important celebrations.

Party wear ghararas use lighter fabrics like chiffon, organza and net with more restrained embroidery, perfect for wedding receptions, Eid gatherings and engagement parties. Mehndi ghararas come in bright, celebratory colours with playful embroidery and lighter construction for dancing and movement.

Fabrics and Embroidery Techniques

The fabric you choose fundamentally changes the character of a gharara. Heavy fabrics like velvet, raw silk and jamawar create a structured, regal silhouette ideal for bridal wear. The weight of the fabric holds the gathered knee ruffle in place and provides a strong base for dense embroidery. For party and occasion wear, we use chiffon, organza, tissue silk and net which create a lighter, more flowing effect. Our embroidery is entirely hand-stitched. Techniques include zardozi with real gold and silver metallic wire, dabka coil work that adds three-dimensional texture, tilla thread for fine linear detailing, and gota kinari borders for a classic Mughal finish. We also work with Swarovski crystals, pearls and mirror work for contemporary designs.

Styling a Gharara for Different Occasions

For bridal wear, style your gharara with a large dupatta draped over the head, heavy jhumka earrings, a nath (nose ring) and chooriyan (bangles). The dupatta should be pinned securely as it is part of the overall silhouette. For party wear, a smaller dupatta pinned at one shoulder keeps the look elegant without the formality of full coverage. Pair with pointed khussa shoes or embroidered sandals. Avoid high stilettos as they can catch in the gathered fabric. Both are wide-legged traditional trouser styles, but the key difference is at the knee. A gharara has gathered fabric at the knee creating a bell effect, while a sharara flares smoothly without a knee seam. Ghararas tend to look more formal and traditional, making them ideal for bridal and heavily embroidered outfits. Shararas offer a more modern, streamlined look that works well for parties and lighter occasions. Many of our brides choose a gharara for their baraat and a sharara for their walima. The making process takes 8 to 12 weeks, including a midway fitting to check the knee gathering, overall length and kurta fit.
